Service and Washes!

by Errin on December 20, 2009

Today was a day to get caught up on some servicing for the bikes. The Surly LHT chain had gotten noticeably louder. I think riding in the rain last week had taken it’s toll on the usually dry bike. It was in need of a wash, and so was the Fargo. The Fargo had seen 2 dirt rides in the last 3 weeks so it needed to be cleaned and lubed as well.

My friend has been teaching me how to use an external flash on the G10. This is one of many attempts. The LHT is hard to shoot using a flash due to the reflective Schwalbe tires.

The LHT got a thorough cleaning. The chain was cleaned and lubed, and then washed. I had to make some adjustments to the front derailleur. I’m not sure that I made it better though. I need to take a class and get better at that. Now she’s all cleaned up and ready for the week.

The Fargo was just plain dirty. It didn’t need anything special, other than the chain cleaned and lubed. I love the look of the black spokes, wheels and tires on this bike. It looks much better when it’s clean.

I didn’t manage to get any riding in this weekend, but it was good to get the bikes taken care of. I guess if you can’t ride ‘em, it’s still good to spend time around them right?

    The bikes look nice.

I don’t enjoy cleaning bicycles, it always seems to take a lot longer than it should. And, when it’s cold outside and you have no garage, it can be hard to accomplish.

I don’t really enjoy it either. It is a great time to go over your bike though. Maybe make those adjustments you’ve been putting off. It’s also a good time to check out general wear and tear. Tighten some bolts and lube your chain. I don’t know how it happened, but my main water bottle cage was bent. It was a great time to fix it.
