2010 Goals

by Errin on January 2, 2010

It’s that time of the year when everyone announces their goals. The start of a new year being a perfect time to start off on a new foot. I guess I should add my goals to the list.

Bicycling-
I would like to do some overnighters this year. Some bikepacking on the Fargo maybe? Or a ride up the coast on the LHT? I would also like to ride a brevet or two this year. I missed the first one of the year, so I’m not off to a great start, but I plan to make it up in the next couple of weeks. All I’ve been able to think about lately is doing some long rides. Of course, riding long distances takes a large amount of time and so time management will be a challenge. Work has a habit of getting in the way of all the fun stuff, but it’s a necessary evil.

We have also signed up for a fun ride on our new (to us) tandem, so I’m looking forward to sharing my love of pedalin’ with the wife. Hopefully that will work on two levels, I can get my pedalin’ in without having to spend many hours away.

I’d also like to pedal at least 5000 miles this year. I think that’s reasonable if I continue commuting like I have been.

Motorcycling-
This past year I’ve pretty much ignored my KTM. It’s been over a year, by just a couple of days, since I crashed in Baja. With everyday that passes I become more comfortable with the thought of riding the moto again. It’s taken much longer than I thought it would to get over the crash. The bulk of the damage ended up being mental. My foot still hurts from time to time, but I can deal with that. It’s my head that’s been the limiting factor. This year though, I will ride the moto some more. Even if it’s just commuting miles it will keep my truck in the driveway, which would be a nice benefit to my wallet.

Hiking/Backpacking-
This is another thing that takes a lot of time. There are many trails nearby though, so with some careful planning I should be able to get some good hikes in. Of course some bikepacking would be the best of both worlds. Just need to do it I guess.

Spanish-
I really need to continue pushing myself here. I was pretty lazy most of the year with learning spanish. Tengo que cambiar que este año.

Photography-
I know I’ve gotten better this past year, but I’ve got a lot to learn. Maybe a class would be a good thing to consider this year.

Phew! I’ve got my work cut out for me this year. I sure hope I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew. This time next year I hope to have many of these adventures behind me and new challenges to look forward to.
