Today’s Good Deed

by Errin on January 5, 2010

On my way in today I came across a bike messenger sitting on the side of the road. Her rear wheel was off the bike. I asked if she needed help, which she did. She had a pinch flat, and couldn’t get the tire back on.

No problem, so I pull out my tools and get to installing the tire. I noticed that the valve stem was short, but I didn’t think too much about it. Dumb move. The tire is installed and I go to pump up the tire and guess what? Not enough valve stem is exposed through the rim. She had some deep-v type rims. Nuts. So the next option is to patch the original tube. She doesn’t have a patch kit, and I remember seeing my patch kit on the dining room table. Damn! I usually carry so many tools, but today I failed.

I apologized for not being able to help, and start to pack up my tools. I didn’t want to leave her stranded but I didn’t know what else to do. Walking back to my bike I notice that her front rim is shallow, and it has a long valve stem. Wait a minute! Let’s switch the tubes!

She thought I was crazy, but I assured her it would work. So we start all over, taking the front tire off and removing the tube. I get the rear tire fixed, pumped up and she installs the rear wheel on the bike. Then I move back to the front wheel. It’s not too long before she’s back on the road.

What a fun way to start the day. It’s always a good feeling to help other cyclists. I just asked her to carry the right tubes and patch kit, because it might be me that needs the help next time!
