Once a week I try to do a long ride home to increase my miles. I have a minimum amount of miles I try to log during the week, and this helps when I have to drive into work on certain days. I usually try to do a ride that is the equivalent of my commute to work and back so that I don’t loose any time on the bike. The drawback of course is less time at home with the wifey. So this week I had the idea to ride home, grab her and head off to a group ride that happens in our area on Tuesday nights.
So that’s what I did. I made it home, switched the lights over from the LHT to the Tandem and we took off. Our plan was to meet with the Eastside Bikes Club and join them for their ride. We made it to the meet spot but the group had left already. Oh well, what next? I hadn’t eaten dinner yet, so I suggested some really good/bad for you food from The Hat back in Alhambra. She was willing so we got the tandem going again and were on our way.
The ride was pretty uneventful, until we got near The Hat. We pulled into the alleyway and I see a guy (dressed nicely) parked in the middle of the alley with his door open taking a leak! So I tell Serbrina “Don’t look!” and luckily she misses the horrible sight.
We get to The Hat and get in line to order and guess who comes up to talk to us? The alley pisser! He is wasted, and I mean really wasted. So he begins to talk our ears off about living in the area and misc things. We tried to end the uncomfortable conversation many times, but he just kept gravitating towards us. We sat in the corner, and he sat next to us. Damn. What luck.
I ate my Chili Cheese Dog as fast as I could so we could get back on the road. We had an idea of which way he was headed so we went the other way. I tried to keep the tandem moving quickly, but the extra weight of the chili, the cheese and dog kept the speeds down. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Aside from the crazy drunk guy we had a great ride on the tandem. So good that we’re going to try and make it a weekly event. This way I’ll be able to still get my miles in, and Serbrina will be building up her miles at the same time. The most important thing is that we’re doing it together. Next time I’ll bring a better camera. Anyone care to join us?
