Hey Gang. I know it’s been a while, ok, a long while. It’s been almost exactly a year actually since last I blogged and you read. Sorry, but we’ve just been enjoying our new life. That sounds weird, but it’s true. For years I’ve been driven by a desire to do as much good for people no matter what. My amazing wife was very sick and selfishly I needed something for me to help check out I guess. I only see that now though. In the past year she has gotten her health back and I’ve gotten my partner back.
So for that past year (plus) I’ve been spending every second that I can with my wife Serbrina. That means not to much pedalin’, I had my lowest year ever in 2015, and not much other than just doing stuff with her. However my Mom still has MS, and there is still more work to do. It kind of worked out in my favor since my local Bike MS event essentially took off 2016. Up until now the events have been based out of Ventura, and the last two years ended up in Santa Barbara. In 2016 they announced that the event would now be earlier in the year, in March, and also in a new venue. Now my local event is super local! Like, local local! They’ve moved the SoCal Bike MS event to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena! Rad!
One other change they did was to make the event only one day. I see pros and cons of this but selfishly it works for me. See the prior October event was on the weekend of my Nephew’s birthday and the new event is on my wife’s birthday weekend. Damn! I guess I’ve got some bad scheduling luck. However, since it’s only one day I’ve managed to work it out with the wife. Part of that will be getting her on the bike and maybe even riding with me.
Ok, so here’s the deal. I’ll be updating with more info soon, but here is some starter info. There will be three routes. 30, 60 and 100 mile routes. They all start and finish at the Rose Bowl and basically head east and back. Adventurous riders will ride up Highway 39 to East Fork and then over to Glendora Mountain Road. That’s the one I’m looking at, but I’ll ride whatever Serbrina wants to ride. You can see the routes here. Come ride with me!
I’m working on new kits for 2017. These aren’t going to be your run of the mill super cool now kit. These are going to be different because our team is different. Our team is gonna be punk rock. More on that soon. This event is on our local roads now so let’s show our local flavor. For 2017 the team is called LA River Camp Coffee and I’d be super stoked if you’d consider joining me in this. The last team grew by leaps and bounds thanks to the LA Bike community and the crew from LA River Camp Coffee. I hope you’ll consider joining me again on the team and spending a day on our bikes. MS is a real pain in my ass and I’d like your help in fighting it. Click here to join team LA River Camp Coffee.
If’n you don’t want to ride with us but can donate to my ride than click here to support me. I appreciate each and every donation. I think this is gonna be a great year. Let’s do this!
Another great turnout today!
Today’s turnout was the largest to date! A ton of new faces made it out and I even ran out of stickers and pins. Good problems to have right?
Thanks for coming out gang!
Earlier this week I recorded an interview with Alex of ibrewmyowncoffee.com for their podcast. He reached out to me last week to talk about the growth of #larivercampcoffee. It’s so strange to see this thing growing like it has been. I guess we’re hittin’ the big time!
Here’s the link to listen to the interview!
Another week, another #larivercampcoffee. This week the stakes were raised a bit. I used my Bakepacker to make some Banana Bread. It was nowhere as good as the Banana Bread from Topanga Creek Bicycles, but it was good. I’ve got a lot to learn from Chris. Also, Jeff brought a flower, and that was nice.
We had a good turnout today. A couple new faces made it out as well as the usual characters. Nathan nailed it by bringing is own folding chair. I’m pretty sure I’ll have mine out there next week as well. Great idea!
I was able to try out my new Helix Cone from Ocean Air Cycles. It’s a really cool design, but it doesn’t work well with my cup. The paper filter ends up drooping down into the cup to the point that the water in the filter has nowhere to go. I think a taller cup would probably work better. You just need to keep the filter high enough for the water to flow. My cup is too shallow.
Best part of the day was when Greg from Trystero Coffee pedaled up with some new coffee for a couple of us. He lives near by and was able to make a delivery to our meetup. We talked a little about coffee but mostly about motos, which is always rad.
Hope to see some new faces out there next week as well as the ones I’ve come to expect. I look forward to every Wednesday now and starting the day off with good cup of coffee and hangin’ with some good people. See ya then!
Here are a few more pics from Instagram from today.

This week we had our largest turnout to date! About 20 people came out to enjoy some coffee or tea along the LA River. Some brought stoves, some brought coffee in a thermos, some brought donuts and Kyle brought biscuits! A ton of new faces came out and hopefully next week there will be more. Check out the pics and if you can come out next week. We meet at Sunnynook Park on the LA River bike path. Just north of the Glendale/Hyperion Street bridge between 7 and 8 am. See you there!
Larger versions of the pics can be seen here.
Today we had another weekly installment of our LA River coffee gang. Wait, we’re a gang now? YEP! Our numbers doubled since last week! It was pretty rad to see all the people show up today. Woody brought his son out in his trailer and Steven walked over! Bikes are fun, but not necessary.
I brought two stoves out this time to help speed things up, but we only had one grinder so that kept things slow. These are the growing pains I suppose of a growing group. I’m really looking forward to what next week will bring. Thanks to everyone for coming out again. Let’s keep it going!

I’ve been really trying to participate in Mary’s #Coffeeneuring challenge that started a couple weeks ago. Plans that were set in motion months ago have conspired to keep me off the bike on the weekend’s though, so I’ve had to make do with weekday outings.
For a few months a small group of us have been meeting along the LA River before work to enjoy a cup, talk about bikes and then pedal off on our own directions to work. It’s become something that I look forward to every week. I haven’t done the best job at taking pics, but here are a few from our meeting last week. We started out as just a couple people showing up with their coffee in a thermos and now we the group is growing and we are brewing coffee outside. This would count as #Coffeeneuring #2. Kjeld posted more photos here. Check them out!
